Pronunciation

Page history last edited by Heather Eaton 2 yrs ago

Study the pronunciation of the words we listed and learned in class.

Remember double "ll" is a "y" sound in Spanish. Quesadilla, tortilla, me llamo

"H"s are silent.   Hasta la vista, baby. Hola, hasta luego,

When a "d" falls between 2 vowels it sounds more like a "th".   Adios, nada

" ñ " sounds like a "ny" as in the word canyon.  piña colada, El niño, mañana, etc.

***Spanish is said to be an easy language because it has consistant pronunciation rules. After a few weeks, you should be able to pronounciate ANY word in Spanish, because the vowels and consonants never (or seldom - but that is more advanced) change the way they sound.

Self-Test

Can you say hello 3 different ways, and know when to use each?

Can you say goodbye 5 different ways, and recognize what each one implies?

Can you ask someone their name, and respond?

Can you ask someone how they are a few different ways?

***Remember, there are several countries that speak Spanish, we won't learn how to say all the colloquelisms (kind of like "slang") in this class. But what you are learning, will be understood by all spanish speakers.
